About

We believe in good journalism.1

Unfortunately, some newspaper articles are so hopelessly inaccurate and ill-informed they border on the dangerous. This is especially true when science or health is concerned. And don’t make the mistake of thinking that it’s just the tabloids, a lot of these articles also appear in main stream ‘quality’ newspapers.

Basically the truth is not what sells newspapers. But it should be.

There is a small and growing number of individuals around the internet who are calling out irresponsible journalism wherever they spot it. Many of these people are experts in their field and contribute their time for free, often writing fascinating blog posts which are much more informed and interesting than the article they are critiquing.

News Crud is a little tool that basically ties together bad newspaper articles with further information about the subject like another (better) newspaper article or a blog post into one URL that can be tweeted or emailed.

Eric, I salute you on your noble project. I agree, journalism has often been dis-serviced by journalists themselves.

    Eric,
When I read about Tom Scotts labels, my first reaction was “the web needs these as well”. That’s how I found you.

My first reaction to news crud was “good idea, but it deserves a better tool”. What about a browser add-on to add and share labels transparently?

I looked at Google Sidewiki to try and integrate with that service but I couldn’t find an API that I could easily use to write to it. Also thought of a chrome plugin but I’ve not had time to look at it properly, but I agree would be a good idea. (Feel free to nick the newscrud label images if you fancy having a go at a browser pluggin yourself.)
